An Israeli firm develops a step-on scanner that saves airline passengers having to remove their shoes for security checks. The scanner is used in conjunction with existing airport security checks to spot weapons or suspicious metal components concealed in footwear and an explosives-sniffing version is now being developed. The current version costs around 5, 000 dollars. The equipment is already being used in almost 20 countries around the world and is being assessed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

The Transportation Security Administration has announced a policy change: New, unfilled pocket lighters can be packed in checked luggage on commercial flights. In April, the TSA had banned all lighters from being taken onboard aircraft. For the makers of Zippo pocket lighters, which are sold without fuel - this is good news, as it is for collectors and customers. This revised policy applies only to checked luggage. Today TSA officials in Minot rededicated themselves to protecting the safety of airline travelers. At a ceremony at the International Airport, TSA officials retook the oath to serve and protect, were issued badges to be worn on their uniforms and unveiled the new TSA uniforms that will be standard issue starting September 11th. John Hershey, the Federal Security Director for TSA, says the devotion and dedication of terrorists is formidable and never ending, which is why the TSA must maintain its vigilance and ability to evolve...
