July 17: Surgeons in Taiwan operate on a woman with Elephantiasis, allowing her to walk again.

Elephantiasis GlaxoSmithKline has announced that it has made a $250,000 donation to The Carter Center to assist the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia with launching a program to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis. The donation will help enable a two-year initiative to scale up mass drug administration for LF in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. The announcement came during a celebration for the 10th anniversary of GSK's commitment to the Global Program to Eliminate LF at The Carter Center in Atlanta.

Joseph Merrick was called the Elephant Man because of the abnormal masses of flesh which began growing on his face and body when he was a child. Treated as a freak for much of his life, Merrick eventually found work as a sideshow attraction. He was later befriended by surgeon Frederick Treves and ended his days as a permanent resident of London's Whitechapel Hospital, where he died at age 27.
